These Sourdough Applesauce Brownies and Blondie Brownies are both made with a Sourdough Basic Starter. The taste is subtle and makes for a wonderful brownie. The Applesauce Brownie is so moist while the Blondie is more cake like with a delicious white frosting.
Sourdough Blondie Brownies
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (1 package) white chocolate pieces
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts optional
Directions:
Grease an 9 inch baking dish.
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
In a medium bowl cream butter or margarine and brown sugar.
Add in egg and vanilla and beat until fluffy.
Stir in sourdough starter.
In a small bowl add flour, baking soda and salt.
Combine with the wet ingredients and mix together.
Add the white chocolate chips and nuts if using.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
Save some chips to sprinkle on top and let them melt in if not using a frosting.
Sourdough Applesauce Brownies
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 1/4 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter
- 2/3 cups applesauce
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Directions:
Grease a 9 x 9 baking dish.
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Large bowl, cream shortening and sugar.
Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Stir in sourdough starter, applesauce and milk.
In a small bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Mix wet and dry ingredients together.
Bake for 40 to 50 minutes.
Cinnamon Topping
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup applesauce
Combine everything together. Pour over cooled brownies.
