7. Thuja

The tall cypress plant with the evergreen leaves can reach heights of between six and 20 m. The branches are dark green on the top and light green below. The branches of the thuja are branched horizontally and the individual leaves are fanned out like scales. They are needle-shaped on very young shoots. The thuja blooms in summer and its seeds are in brown scaly cones.

The wood and the cones, but especially the tips of the thuja branches, are poisonous. A critical dose is not known, but possible symptoms are as follows:

• Inflammation of the mucous membranes
• Gastrointestinal complaints with nausea, nausea, flatulence, and diarrhea
• Liver damage
• Kidney damage
• Seizures
